.XXX Delay unwarranted

CNET’s News.com and BBC News both carried the story of Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) delaying the implementation of a new domain .XXX due to Bush administration pressure for further review.

“… the Bush administration intervened in the domain name creation process by sending a letter saying: “The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children.”

“After ICANN’s vote to approve .xxx, conservative groups in the United States called on their supporters to ask the Commerce Department to block the new suffix. The Family Research Council, for instance, warned that “pornographers will be given even more opportunities to flood our homes, libraries and society with pornography through the .xxx domain.”

“The volume of correspondence opposed to creation of a .xxx (domain) is unprecedented,”

I say let’s give it the green light. According to the article the fears include the creation of a virtual red-light district as well as giving the porn industry legitamacy. Give me a break. The old ostrich’s head in the sand routine. A.) There already is a virtual red-light district. B.) Legitamacy is a cop out. Playboy has already reached iconic status. As for the new domain suffix providing more opportunities to flood our homes with unsolicited pornography is just flat wrong. I think the domain would provide a better method for filtering and blocking such sites via setting controls to restrict the entire .xxx domain, and I’m all for that.

In an aside, the ACLU has raised concerns about the possibility of such a domain being made mandatory for adult sites. Don’t we already classify your domain suffix based on function (.com, .org, .gov) Should this be mandatory? The jury is still out, I invite your comments.

Creating a virtual red-light district would hopefully have the same segmenting effect of a real-world red-light district. I believe it will making blocking these sites even easier. I invite your comments.
