Putting love on the list
I unplugged this week and God took the opening to punch my perspective and priorities hard. He asked a question I cannot escape,
What really matters?
When I examine the answer that my actions give I’m appalled at how much of that answer is information and knowledge as opposed to people. I’m an intoxicated infovore; a well-informed clanging symbol. I have built entire systems of twitter lists, iPhone apps, and RSS feeds to stay wired into the world and yet I neglect to love my neighbor, much less be a friend to friend.
I’m not a big fan of 1 Cor 13:2 at the moment, it hits a bit too close to home –
“And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”
I’m beginning by asking God to help me love others more. To see the opportunity and to seize it to honor Him. Next, since I don’t get anything done without a tasklist so this week I added, “How do I love…”, I put names in there and figure out how to pray or serve them. Like most spiritual lessons I suspect its one I’ll learn slowly.
All I’m sure of is my actions need to reflect the truth that none of the “what” matters only the who.
