Firefox 3 – Untweak Chrome.css prior to Upgrade

I wanted to give a heads up to those of you who have tweaked your Firefox browser interface by following my recommendations listed in “Firefox Tweaks – The Ultimate Guide“. There is a minor issue with the tweak that removed the back and forward buttons when they are disabled withing Firefox 2. If you upgrade to Firefox 3 with that tweak in the modified chrome.css file you will not see the back/forward buttons at all. To prevent this you simply need to remove the following lines prior to upgrade.

/* Remove Back button when there’s nothing to go Back to /
#back-button[disabled=”true”] { display: none; }

/ Remove Forward button when there’s nothing to go Forward to */
#forward-button[disabled=”true”] { display: none; }

One more Firefox tip. A frustrated friend deleted their firefox profile while trying to fix a similar issue. The thinking being that Firefox would create a new profile with a default chrome.css. This is NOT the case. If Firefox can’t find the profile it will not open. Normally the error message states that Firefox is already running and you need to close any instances prior to opening it again. This error will also occur if the profile is corrupted.

If you ever find yourself dealing with this issue the easy fix is go to Start->Run->type “firefox -p”. This will open a dialog box that will allow you to delete and create user profiles. Please note that when you delete your profile you delete bookmarks, addons, preferences… everything. Make sure to keep a backup copy of your bookmarks or just use the addon Foxmarks like I do.
